How to check your phone's gyroscope with this tool

Open this page on your phone and click 'Start Test' on the illustration above. Move your phone on its 3 axes (roll, pitch and yaw: see explanation here) and check that it moves in a corresponding way in the illustration.

What is a gyroscope? What exactly does it do?

The gyroscope inside your phone checks the movements of your phone around its axes (X, Y, Z, or roll, pitch, yaw). In simpler terms the gyroscope checks for the movements of your phone as it turns around itself, but the center of it stays more or less in place.

If you're not spinning your phone but instead moving it in space - whether up-down, sideways, or in-out - that's a different kind of movement that's generally tested by the accelerometer rather than the gyroscope.

Pitch & yaw work well on the test, but roll seems a bit weird, why is that?

This is because of limitations of the 3d software displaying the test. If you want to make extra sure that roll also works well, take a look at the changing number for "Roll:" under "Measurements" while you're rolling your phone.
